Ever found yourself lost in the vast universe of Warhammer tabletop roleplaying games?
Confused about whether Wrath & Glory is set in the same universe as Soulbound?
Wondering which game system might be right for your group’s playstyle?
Yeah, us too. (And we do this for a living!)
With multiple settings spanning both fantasy and science fiction, each with its own unique mechanics and tone, working your way through Cubicle 7’s impressive lineup of Warhammer RPGs can be daunting.
That’s why we built this guide to help walk you through each game’s setting, system, and theme. Whether you’re drawn to the grim peril of the Old World, the mythic realms of Age of Sigmar, or the dark far future of the 41st Millennium.
Let’s explore these universes and find the perfect Warhammer RPG for your next campaign.
Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (WFRP) 4th Edition
This is the grandfather of Cubicle 7’s Warhammer line.
Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 4th Edition throws players into the gritty world of the Old World. WFRP uses a d100 percentile system where players roll under their skill values to succeed, with critical successes and failures adding some pretty dramatic consequences.
WFRP emphasizes a “grim and perilous” tone to the game style, where characters are often ordinary people facing overwhelming odds.
Survival, intrigue, and the constant threat of Chaos corruption drive the narrative. Character advancement follows a career system that allows players to progress through various professions – from rat catcher to witch hunter – each providing unique skills and abilities.
If you enjoy dark fantasy, then WFRP delivers an immersive, challenging experience with a strong horror element.
Age of Sigmar: Soulbound
Age of Sigmar: Soulbound transports players to the Mortal Realms. Unlike its grimmer cousin, Soulbound casts players as the titular Soulbound – powerful heroes chosen by the gods whose essences are bound together, creating a powerful tether that protects and empowers them.
The game uses the C7D6 dice pool system, where players roll six-sided dice and count successes. This mechanic combines with the game’s Mettle and Soulfire resources, which offers a more heroic, cinematic style of play.
While horror elements do exist in the game’s setting, they take a backseat to epic action. This makes Soulbound perfect for players who prefer their fantasy more mythic than mundane, with powerful characters tackling world-shaking threats across fantastical realms.
Warhammer 40K: Wrath & Glory
Set in the war-torn 41st Millennium, Wrath & Glory has players use a d6 dice pool system where results of 4+ count as successes, with 6s providing extra benefits. The unique “Wrath” die brings some fun narrative complications or boons to the game.
One thing we love about Wrath & Glory is its versatility. The game makes use of a “tier system” that gives campaigns plenty of room to play with. You can have stories about common soldiers and ork boyz just trying to survive, all the way up to inquisitors determining the fates of worlds.
If you enjoy high-octane action with heavy combat elements and a strong narrative focus, Wrath & Glory offers plenty to jump in and get started with from the start.
Warhammer 40K: Imperium Maledictum
Imperium Maledictum is a return to the beloved d100 system of earlier 40K RPGs. This game puts players in the Macharian Sector – a region carved out by the conquests of the legendary Lord Solar Macharius.
Players take on the role of Imperial citizens in service to a powerful patron, with gameplay focused on investigation and social encounters rather than constant combat. The Influence system tracks your standing with various Imperial factions, determining what resources you can access and where you can go during investigations.
Imperium Maledictum is perfect for players who prefer intrigue, horror, and investigation over constant firefights, and who want to explore the political complexities of the Imperium.
Legacy: Dark Heresy and FFG’s 40K RPGs
Before Cubicle 7 took up the mantle of Warhammer 40K, there was another: Fantasy Flight Games. FFG brought many d100-based games to life, notably Dark Heresy.
While no longer in production, these games left a lasting legacy – with Imperium Maledictum building on the game’s original foundation. Many of the investigative elements, the horror themes, and the focus on “human agents facing overwhelming odds” can be seen throughout Cubicle 7’s approach.
For those who want to get a feel for the earlier styles, you can still find some of the FFG rulebooks and supplements available. These can provide additional background information and inspiration for creating your own stories within the 40K universe.
